cgCraft newsletter 01 / winter ‘05

Happy New Year!

…from cgCraft to all our friends, relatives and clients. Without your support, your business and your cornbread, 2005 would not have been such a successful year for us.

What began as a homegrown business three years ago has blossomed into a premier web development and animation studio that’s now located in the heart of Portland’s Old Port District.

2005 was the year that cgCraft became a limited liability corporation (LLC), and at this time also took on Justin Velgos as an equal partner and owner of cgCraft, allowing us to broaden our scope of services and take on more projects.

We are excited to see what develops in 2006, and in the encrypted words of New Year’s most beloved song, Auld Lang Syne :

“And there's a hand my trusty fiere,
And gie's a hand o thine,
And we'll tak a right guid-willie waught,
For auld lang syne

fiere = friend
guid-willie waught = goodwill drink
auld lang syne = times gone by

JobsInTheUS.com

thumbnailEarly in 2005 cgCraft was hired by JobsInTheUS to help create a visual identity for television broadcast. What emerged was Jake the Gorilla and his adventures in job seeking. What began as lifeless pencil sketches has turned into an ad campaign that is broadcasted throughout New England on most major television stations. 2005 was also the year of having random people walk up to us at the strangest of times only to tell us that they “liked our monkey”. We all know what they meant.

Cold River Vodka

thumbnailLate in 2005, we were approached by the team at Briggs Advertising to assist them in developing a website for a local vodka company. As it turns out, this “local” vodka company was Cold River Vodka, makers of a Maine potato-based vodka. As soon as the website launched, and not a minute too soon, people were flocking to buy this high-end vodka; we mean flocking to the website.

…and before you ask, the answer is no, working on a project where alcohol is the product does not get you a life-time supply.

Portland Children’s Museum

thumbnailFinally, we had the opportunity to build a Flash-based game which would compliment an exhibit on Forestry at the Portland Children’s Museum. The game was targeted at the 4-7 year old age group and helps kids to understand the effects logging and forestry have on our environment. Since then, the game has been used by other children’s museums in the New England region. There are no solid plans yet to further develop this game for the Xbox 360.
